machine host (server) with an unlimited number of server operating system
environments (OSEs) to be managed through System Center Virtual Machine Manager
(VMM) 2008 R2.

Supported virtual machine hosts include Windows Server 2008 R2,
Microsoft Hyper-V Server, Virtual Server 2005 R2, and VMware ESX. (VMware’s

of resource allocation and allows rapid reconfiguration.

through the Windows PowerShell command-line interface.

When a virtual machine is deployed, VMM analyzes performance data
and resource requirements for both the workload and the host, allowing the
administrator to fine-tune placement algorithms to receive optimal deployment
recommendations from the software. Tools and wizards simplify converting
physical machines to virtual ones (physical-to-virtual, or P2V, conversions)
and converting VMware virtual machines to the Microsoft VHD format
(virtual-to-virtual, or V2V, conversions).

The VMM Administrator Console provides a real-time central view of
all virtual machines and resource usage; resource settings can be changed on
virtual machines without interrupting workloads, and virtual machines can be
rapidly migrated from one host to another to optimize physical resources. For
example, if network storage is close to being overallocated in one location, a
network administrator can change the allocation.

VMM can be configured to allow nonadministrators to deploy
nonserver virtual environments through a self-service web portal. For example,
developers could create an instance of a specific operating system in a virtual
environment to test the operation of their software with that operating system.
Client MLs license these nonadministrators to use the virtual environments.

Service Pack 1 includes support for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, new

VMM can be configured to allow nonadministrators to deploy
